Resistance of gastrointestinal nematodes to anthelmintics in sheep (Ovis aries) BABT
Thomaz-Soccol,Vanete; Souza,Felipe Pohl de; Sotomaior,Cristina; Castro,Edilene Alcântara; Milczewski,Viviane; Mocelin,Giovani; Silva,Maria do Carmo Pessoa e.
The fecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) was used in a survey for anthelmintic resistance in 42 sheep farms, in five different regions in Paraná State, Brazil between July 1996 - July 2000. Animals with natural infection were tested. Five drugs were used individually or in combination - benzimidazole, imidazothiazole, ivermectin, milbemicina and closantel. Results showed that the prevalence of resistance to all anthelmintic was as high as 88.1% for benzimidazoles (oxfendazole), 78.6% for ivermectin, 56.4% for closantel, 38.7% for closantel + oxfendazole, 38% for levamisole, and 23.6% for moxidectin. There was multiple resistance in all tested farms. The most important infective larvae recovered from culture were Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus...

South Brazilian farmers’ perceptions concerning sheep tail docking Ciência Rural
Stamm,Fabiana de Orte; Molento,Marcelo Beltrão; Molento,Carla Forte Maiolino.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to better understand farmers’ perceptions regarding sheep welfare and procedures concerning the tail docking of sheep in the state of Parana, Southern Brazil. The study was carried out via telephone interviews or personally with 146 sheep farmers. Twenty-eight farmers (19.2%) did not tail dock; the main reasons given were because they raised short-hair sheep breeds. One hundred and eighteen farmers docked their sheep tails (80.8%). The main reasons given were hygiene (61.0%), facilitated mating (42.4%), breed standards (29.7%), and esthetics (26.3%). Rubber ring was the main method used for tail docking. Although farmers in Parana recognized that sheep are sentient animals and that tail docking causes pain,...

Validation of a customized subset of SNPs for sheep breed assignment in Brazil PAB
Paim,Tiago do Prado; McManus,Concepta; Vieira,Fábio Danilo; Oliveira,Stanley Robson de Medeiros; Facó,Olivardo; Azevedo,Hymerson Costa; Araújo,Adriana Mello de; Moraes,José Carlos Ferrugem; Yamagishi,Michel Eduardo Beleza; Carneiro,Paulo Luiz Souza; Caetano,Alexandre Rodrigues; Paiva,Samuel Rezende.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the usefulness of a subset of 18 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for breed identification of Brazilian Crioula, Morada Nova (MN), and Santa Inês (SI) sheep. Data of 588 animals were analyzed with the Structure software. Assignments higher than 90% confidence were observed in 82% of the studied samples. Most of the low-value assignments were observed in MN and SI breeds. Therefore, although there is a high reliability in this subset of 18 SNPs, it is not enough for an unequivocal assignment of the studied breeds, mainly of hair breeds. A more precise panel still needs to be developed for the widespread use in breed assignment.
